Chiropractic
is derived from words meaning done by hand. In Davenport, Iowa in
1895, David Daniel (DD) Palmer discovered that he could affect a
person’s health by moving the vertebrae of their spine. He
reasoned that the body had an ample supply of natural healing power
transmitted through the nervous system. Simple concept today but
back then Chiropractic went head to head with what we know today
as traditional medicine into challenging the way most people took
care of their health. Patient’s today enjoy how chiropractic
makes them feel, and how adjustments help them live healthy and
active lives.
Chiropractic is based on the principle that the body can heal itself
when the skeletal system is correctly aligned and the nervous system
is functioning properly. These important functions are controlled
by the brain, spinal cord, and all of the nerves of the body. The
skull protects the delicate tissues of the brain. The moving bones
of the spine protect the vulnerable communication pathways of the
spinal cord and nerve roots. If the nervous system is impaired,
it can cause malfunction or dis-ease of the tissues and organs throughout
the body.
Doctors call this the Vertebral Subluxation Complex. Vertebral,
meaning the bones of the spine. Subluxation, meaning mis-aligned
vertebrae and complex, meaning consisting of more than one part.
Chiropractic is the science of locating malfunctioning spinal structures,
the art of reducing their impact to the nervous system, and the
philosophy that, when working properly, the body has the potential
to heal itself.
Today
most people understand this as the “MIND BODY” connection.
If you think about it, Chiropractic really is keeping the mind/body
connection alive and well because that's what the spinal cord is;
the connection from your brain to your body. People today are realizing
that health begins inside their bodies and are taking steps to better
prepare for a long and healthy life. Chiropractic care perfectly
fits this health model and is at the forefront of helping people
to focus on health instead of just sickness. In fact, next to medical
care, Chiropractic is the second largest health choice visited by
patients today.
